#ThursdayThoughts – STOP BEING A WHORE

STOP BEING A WHORE

I know you may be reading the title of this post in shock.  You probably can’t believe what I wrote.  The truth is, its hard to stop being a whore.  A flavor whore.  My definition of a flavor whore is the constant eating for taste indulgence instead of nutritional satisfaction.

I am not afraid to admit, I love good food.  The food may not necessarily be good for me to eat, but it tastes good.  I’ve expressed to you my weaknesses of sweets, potatoes & cheeses.  Any one of these combos thrown in my face, I’ll have to channel deep within to resist.  Some days are better than others.  Today I’ll be talking about when I do break down and how I just keep eating until I feel like stopping.

In whatever I’m eating, I’m usually adding an uncontrolled portion amount.  On top of that I’m going back for seconds.  Sometimes thirds.  Make matters worst, I’m not even hungry.  It’s the taste that I’m chasing (Taste-Chasing).  It’s like a drug.  There is actually science behind this behavior.  When we eat, our brains release a chemical called DOPAMINE.   In short, you know that feel good feeling you get once you’ve won something?  That joy you feel is a chemical reaction caused by the release of dopamine.  This why you feel happy when you eat.  Sugars causes the brain to release higher amounts of dopamine.  This why the toughest habit for us all to kick, is sugars.  It’s in just about everything we eat.  This is why checking nutritional labels is important.

About once every other month I go on a 10-21 day fast without solids to reel myself back from the damage I’ve done the previous month and a half.  When I come off of these fasts, I’m so excited to eat.  The first taste of just about anything solid I’m so elated!  I do good my first few days back, but after about the fifth day, the gremlin in me comes out.  I find myself stuffing my face with no remorse.  It could be a bag of raw almonds or some cookies at work.  I am constantly around food, so like I said, some days are better for me than others.  The struggle is real.

We all have our indulging moments but these moments turn into sessions.  These sessions are the deciding factor of flavor whoredom.  I’ve caught myself stuffing my face without being anywhere near hungry.  It’s like when I see food, my mission will not be complete until I consume it all.  Some may call this binge eating.  I call it just being greedy.  Either way it’s not good.

During these sessions I’m in love with the flavors that I’m eating.  I call myself done with my one serving in whatever I am having.  After a few moments (literally moments) I can taste the food all over again and I want more.  So I go back for more.  Keep in mind, that I am full.  I could have stopped halfway into my first serving.  These days it doesn’t take much to fill me up.  Psychologically I think that’s another issue of losing weight.  You want to eat like you use to but your body is different.  If you’re not eating like you use to, you think you’re not eating enough so you binge eat.  At least that’s my thinking behind it.

Back to the subject at hand.  This, being a Flavor Whore (Taste-Chasing) has got to stop.  Better yet, IT WILL STOP!  You have to start claiming situations in the now versus a “some-day” proclamation.  Someday isn’t a day of the week.  My will power will have to kick into over drive to over come this.  I have to stop giving in all the time.  Strength is the only way to conquer this.

I’ve read  somewhere, maybe it was a tweet, to wash your mouth out with mouthwash after every meal to control your cravings.  If you can, brush your teeth.  Now I know that may sound elementary because it’s something we’ve been taught during every dentist appointment.  What I’m talking about now has something to do with controlling your eating instead of dental health.

Since these flavors do linger after each meal, chew peppermint gum if you’re not able to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with mouthwash.  This should help with the urges to go back for more.  I chew Wrigley’s double mint gum after meals now.  I’ve always chewed it but for different reasons.  Mainly to hold myself over when I am on a non solid diet.  I chew it to stop the hunger cravings.  This usually gives me about a thirty minute window until I’m able to drink another juice or smoothie.   I also read to drink more water.  Hunger is usually a sign of lack of water.  With that being said, I’m going to finish my last four bottles of water for the day.  This will give me one gallon.  I’ve been doing good these past few days of getting my one gallon in.  What about you?
